The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) has opened applications for the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Lateral Entry Selection Test (LEST) 2027, for admission to Class IX and Class XI for the 2027–28 academic session against vacant seats. This guide covers not just the dates, but the exact syllabus, marks weightage, merit-calculation formula, and reservation policy your child needs to know.
JNV LEST 2027 status (checked 14 October 2026): NVS extended the last date for online applications for both Class IX and Class XI to 15 October 2026. Apply only through the official portals: Class IX and Class XI. The Lateral Entry Selection Test for both classes is on Saturday 10 April 2027.
What Is JNV LEST?
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are fully residential, co-educational schools run by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti under the Ministry of Education, primarily serving talented students from rural India. While Class VI is the main entry point (through JNVST), vacancies that arise in Class IX and Class XI due to withdrawals or transfers : are filled through the Lateral Entry Selection Test (LEST), conducted annually.
JNVs are known for free, high-quality CBSE-affiliated education, fully residential campus life with holistic development, a three-language formula, and a “Migration Scheme” that sends 30% of Class IX students to a JNV in a different linguistic region for one year to promote national integration. Fees are minimal, with most categories fully exempt.

JNV LEST Exam Pattern: In Detail
Class IX (10 April 2027, 2½ hours, objective OMR): English 15 marks, Hindi 15, Mathematics 35 and General Science 35, total 100. Candidates need minimum qualifying marks in all four subjects. Merit is based on Mathematics, Science and the higher of the two language scores. There is no negative marking.
Class XI (10 April 2027, 11:00 AM – 1:30 PM, objective OMR): Class XI admission is also through a written test. It has 100 questions for 100 marks: Mental Ability, English, Science, Social Science and Mathematics, 20 marks each. Candidates need at least 6 out of 20 in each subject. There is no negative marking.

Syllabus Coverage
Mathematics and Science are drawn from NCERT Class VII and Class VIII textbooks, and since these carry the highest marks weightage, they deserve the most study time. English and Hindi cover grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, and language usage at the Class VIII level. Recommended preparation resources include the standard NCERT textbooks for Class VII–VIII along with JNV LEST-specific guides that mirror the exact exam pattern.
Reservation Policy
At least 75% of seats are reserved for candidates from a rural background school, and 33% (one-third) of seats are reserved for girl candidates. SC/ST candidates get reservation in proportion to their district population, subject to a national average minimum, and Divyang (differently-abled) candidates get a 3% reservation along with an additional 50 minutes of exam time.
Fee Structure After Admission
Education is completely free for most students. Students of Class IX to XII contribute ₹600 per month toward the Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi (VVN), a development fund. Full fee exemption applies to SC/ST candidates, BPL (Below Poverty Line) families, Divyang students, and all girl students : meaning a very large share of JNV students study entirely free of cost.
Documents Required
Candidates should keep the following ready in soft copy (JPG format, 10 to 100 KB): a photograph of the candidate, the candidate’s signature, the parent or guardian’s signature, and basic details such as name, date of birth, Aadhaar number, APAAR ID/PEN if available, and Class VIII or Class X study details along with state and district information.
How to Apply for JNV LEST 2027
Go to navodaya.gov.in or the class-specific link mentioned above, and register with the candidate’s basic and academic details. Upload the photograph, signature, and parent’s signature, and fill in address, district, and category details carefully. Review the entire form before final submission, since the correction window that follows the last date allows only limited edits. Submit by 15 October 2026, the extended last date. The prospectuses state that registration is free of cost, and a help desk is available at every JNV to assist with the application process.
Preparation Strategy for Class IX LEST
Allocate more study time to Mathematics and Science, since together they make up 70 of the 100 total marks and both count fully toward merit. Pick your stronger language, English or Hindi, and focus your revision there, since only the higher of the two counts. Don’t neglect the weaker subjects entirely, though : remember that each subject has an independent qualifying cutoff, so a very low score in any one subject can disqualify an otherwise strong candidate. Practice full NCERT Class VII–VIII exercises, since the test is directly aligned to this curriculum rather than a separate competitive syllabus, and simulate the OMR format under timed conditions of 2.5 hours to build speed and accuracy before exam day.
How OziTutors Can Help
With the test on 10 April 2027, students have time to build the Class VIII and Class X foundations each paper assumes. OziTutors does not run a dedicated JNV LEST programme; instead, compare subject tutors for the papers that carry the most marks:
- CBSE Mathematics tutors for Class 9–10 (Class XI applicants; Class IX applicants can ask about Class VIII level)
- CBSE Science tutors for Class 9–10
- CBSE Mathematics tutors for Class 6–8 for Class IX applicants
Book a free first lesson, share the class being applied for, and confirm the tutor’s availability and fee before booking regular lessons.
