NEET 2027 is expected in the first week of May 2027 [VERIFY when NTA confirms]. If you’re starting focused preparation now — whether you’re in Class 12 or taking a drop year — you have roughly nine months. That’s enough for two complete syllabus passes plus a dedicated revision-and-testing phase, if you weight your time by what the exam actually rewards.

How NEET marks are distributed
NEET has 180 scored questions worth 720 marks: Biology 90 questions (360 marks), Chemistry 45 (180), Physics 45 (180). Biology is half the paper — plan accordingly.
Chapter-wise weightage (based on recent NEET papers)
Weightage drifts year to year, but the heavy chapters are remarkably stable.
Biology (~360 marks)
| High-yield area | Typical share |
|---|---|
| Human Physiology | ~12–14% |
| Genetics & Evolution | ~12–14% |
| Ecology & Environment | ~10–12% |
| Cell Biology & Cell Division | ~8–10% |
| Plant Physiology | ~7–9% |
| Reproduction (plant + human) | ~9–11% |
| Biotechnology | ~6–8% |
Takeaway: Genetics, Human Physiology and Ecology together approach a third of the entire exam. NCERT line-by-line mastery of these three is non-negotiable.
Chemistry (~180 marks)
| High-yield area | Typical share |
|---|---|
| Organic: GOC + named reactions + biomolecules | ~30–35% |
| Physical: equilibrium, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, kinetics | ~30–35% |
| Inorganic: chemical bonding, coordination compounds, p-block | ~30–35% |
Takeaway: Chemical Bonding and Coordination Compounds are the two most reliable inorganic scorers. Organic chemistry compounds (pun intended): master General Organic Chemistry early or everything after it wobbles.
Physics (~180 marks)
| High-yield area | Typical share |
|---|---|
| Mechanics (laws of motion, work-energy, rotation) | ~25% |
| Electrodynamics (current, magnetism, EMI) | ~22–25% |
| Modern Physics + Semiconductors | ~15–18% |
| Thermodynamics & KTG | ~8–10% |
| Optics | ~8–10% |
Takeaway: Physics is where most biology-strong students lose their rank. Modern Physics and Semiconductors are the highest marks-per-hour-of-effort chapters in the whole exam — do them early, not last.
The 9-month plan (August 2026 – May 2027)
Phase 1 — First full pass (Aug–Nov 2026, 4 months)
- Cover the full Class 11 + 12 syllabus once, weighted by the tables above.
- Daily split: 3 hrs Biology, 2 hrs Chemistry, 2 hrs Physics (droppers); school students scale to ~4–5 focused hours.
- NCERT first for Biology and Inorganic Chemistry; standard problem sets for Physics and Physical Chemistry.
- Weekly: one chapter-level test per subject.
Phase 2 — Second pass + question volume (Dec 2026 – Feb 2027, 3 months)
- Re-cover everything, but now 70% of time goes to solving previous-year questions (last 10 years) and MCQ banks.
- Maintain an error notebook; classify every mistake as concept, NCERT recall, or silly.
- Fortnightly full syllabus part-tests.
Phase 3 — Test series + revision cycles (Mar–Apr 2027, 2 months)
- Two full-length mocks per week at exactly 2:00 pm (match the real exam slot).
- Between mocks: revise only from your error notebook and NCERT highlights.
- Final 2 weeks: Biology NCERT re-read, formula sheets, no new material.
Common mistakes that cost ranks
- Equal time to all three subjects. Biology is 50% of the marks; weight it.
- Skipping NCERT for “advanced” material. NEET Biology and Inorganic Chemistry are NCERT-verbatim exams.
- Leaving Physics for the end. Daily contact with Physics beats weekend binges.
- Mocks without analysis. A mock you don’t analyse for 3+ hours is entertainment, not preparation.
Should you self-study, join coaching, or take a tutor?
There’s no universal answer — it depends on your discipline, your gaps, and your city. We compared the three honestly in online JEE/NEET tutoring vs coaching. The short version: 1-on-1 works best when you need targeted gap-fixing (e.g. Physics numericals) rather than another full-syllabus lecture pass.
OziTutors’ NEET specialists run exactly that model — diagnostic first, then chapter-targeted sessions. You can also try the AI learning gap analysis to find your weak chapters before spending a rupee.
