India’s Mathematical Olympiad pipeline has three written stages most students encounter: IOQM, RMO, and INMO. They are not three versions of the same exam—each tests different skills at increasing depth.
If you cleared or are targeting IOQM 2026 (6 Sep 2026), this guide explains what changes at RMO (15 Nov 2026) and INMO (17 Jan 2027) so you prepare the right way at each stage.
Three Stages at a Glance
| Stage | Date (2026–27) | Format | Duration | Output style |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IOQM | 6 Sep 2026 | Offline OMR | ~3 hours | Short answers / numeric |
| RMO | 15 Nov 2026 | Written proofs | 3 hours | 6 detailed proofs |
| INMO | 17 Jan 2027 | Written proofs | 4.5 hours | 6 detailed proofs |

IOQM — The National Filter
Purpose: Select students across regions for RMO.
What it feels like: Time-pressured non-routine problems—number theory, combinatorics, geometry, algebra—marked on OMR sheets.
Skills that win:
- Pattern recognition under time limits
- Clean arithmetic and algebraic manipulation
- Strategic skipping (attempt what you can prove quickly)
What does not matter yet: Long written proofs with formal language.
Registration closes 25 July 2026 — step-by-step guide
RMO — The Proof-Writing Gate
Purpose: Regional selection toward INMO (~900 students nationally from RMO performance).
Date: 15 November 2026, 13:00–16:00 hrs.
Format: 6 questions, each expects a complete written proof—not just an answer.
What changes from IOQM:
| IOQM | RMO |
|---|---|
| OMR bubbles | Paragraph proofs |
| Often single clever step | Multi-step logical chains |
| Partial credit limited | Partial credit for meaningful progress |
| Speed across many problems | Depth on fewer problems |
Skills that win:
- Writing clear logic (if-then structure)
- Known lemmas (Pigeonhole, AM-GM intro, angle chasing)
- Knowing when to stop and move on
Students who only practised IOQM-style shortcuts often struggle here—start proof writing in October if IOQM goes well.
INMO — National Stage Toward IMO Camp
Purpose: Select students for the IMOTC (International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp) pool.
Date: 17 January 2027, 12:00–16:30 hrs.
Format: 6 proof questions, 4.5 hours—harder and deeper than RMO.
What changes from RMO:
- Problems combine ideas (e.g. number theory + combinatorics)
- Length and sophistication of proofs increase
- Stamina for 4.5 hours of deep thinking
INMO is where “good school maths” and “olympiad maths” fully diverge.

How to Prepare Differently for Each Stage
| Stage | Weekly focus |
|---|---|
| Before IOQM | Past IOQM/PRMO papers; topic drills |
| Oct–Nov (pre-RMO) | Proof writing templates; RMO archives |
| Dec–Jan (pre-INMO) | INMO-level problems; timed 4.5h mocks |
One book list will not work for all three—shift methods after each stage.
IOQM vs JEE Mathematics
| IOQM | JEE Main Maths | |
|---|---|---|
| Style | Olympiad non-routine | Syllabus-bound, speed MCQ |
| Proof | Minimal at IOQM | Rare |
| Overlap | Helps creative problem speed | Helps algebra/calc mechanics |
Many students do both—use IOQM for depth, JEE for systematic coverage.
