IB Maths AA vs AI: How to Choose the Right Course Ft. OziTutors

IB Maths AA or AI: How to Choose
Enjoyed this?
IB Maths AA (Analysis and Approaches) focuses on algebra, functions, calculus and proof. IB Maths AI (Applications and Interpretation) focuses on statistics, modelling and using technology. AA suits students heading to maths, engineering or physics. AI suits students heading to social sciences, business, or design. Always check the university’s requirement first.

IB Maths AA or AI: How to Choose

In the IB Diploma, you choose between two maths courses, and each comes at Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL). That gives four options. This is one of the earliest big decisions in the diploma, and it is easy to get wrong if you choose by rumour instead of by facts.

Here is how to choose with a clear head.

What are AA and AI?

Analysis and Approaches (AA) is for students who enjoy working with algebra, functions and calculus. It includes more proof and mathematical reasoning. It builds skills that are useful for further maths, physics and engineering.

Applications and Interpretation (AI) is for students who prefer to use maths on real situations. It has a stronger focus on statistics, modelling and interpreting results, and it relies on technology such as a graphing calculator or spreadsheet.

Neither course is “the easy one”. They are different, and each can be demanding at HL.

What is the difference in the exams?

Both courses use written papers and an Internal Assessment (IA), which is a maths investigation of your own. The IA counts for a fifth of the final grade in maths.

One key difference: AA includes a paper where no calculator is allowed, which tests your algebra and calculus by hand. AI expects technology to be used throughout. Paper counts and timings differ between SL and HL, so check the current subject guide for exact details.

Start from your university plans

This is the most important step. Before you choose, look at the entry requirements for the courses you may apply for.

  • Maths, physics, engineering, computer science: many universities ask for AA, often at HL. Some accept AI HL, but many do not.
  • Economics: requirements vary. Some strong programmes ask for AA HL or SL, while others accept AI. Check each one.
  • Business, psychology, geography, design, social sciences: AI is often accepted and can fit well.
  • Medicine and life sciences: requirements vary by country and university. Check carefully.

If you are not sure what you want to study, choose the option that keeps more doors open. In most cases, that is AA.

Then look at your own strengths

Ask yourself:

  • Do I enjoy solving abstract algebra and calculus problems?
  • Am I comfortable working without a calculator?
  • Do I prefer using data and real examples?
  • How did I do in my last two years of maths?

If algebra is a struggle and your goals do not need AA, AI may give you a better chance to do well. If you enjoy problems and puzzles, AA may be more satisfying.

SL or HL?

HL has more content and takes more time. Choose HL if you enjoy maths and need it for university. Choose SL if maths is not central to your plans and you want time for your other subjects. A strong SL grade is better than a weak HL grade in most cases, unless your university requires HL.

Common myths

  • “AI is for weaker students.” Not true. AI HL is a demanding course, and it suits students who like statistics and modelling.
  • “AA is always better for universities.” Not true. It depends on the course. Many courses accept both.
  • “You can easily switch later.” Switching in the second year is hard. Decide early, and if you must change, speak to your coordinator quickly.

How to test yourself before you decide

Ask your teacher for a few sample problems from each course, or try practice questions from the subject guide. Spend an hour on each. Notice which set you enjoy and which one feels like a chore.

How a tutor can help

A tutor can help you in two ways. Before the choice, they can walk you through both courses so you can see the difference. After the choice, they can help you keep up with the pace and prepare for the IA, which is where many students lose time.

FAQ

Can I go to university for engineering with AI? Many engineering programmes ask for AA. Check each university’s stated requirements before choosing.

Is AA HL the hardest maths course? It is the most demanding in terms of content and abstraction. It suits students who enjoy maths and want to go further.

Do both courses have an IA? Yes, both include an Internal Assessment.

Can I take AA at SL and still study economics? Often yes, but it depends on the university. Check the entry requirements for each course you like.
