Enjoyed this?

Yes, often. See what IB, A-level and IGCSE students need for JEE, NEET and CUET: Class 12 level, subjects, AIU equivalence and exam clashes.

Many families abroad worry that choosing the IB, A-levels or another international curriculum closes the door to India. Usually it does not. But there are conditions about the level of the qualification, the subjects you studied and the paperwork. This guide explains them.

In many cases yes, but it depends on whether your Class 12 qualification is recognised as equivalent to the Indian Class 12 and whether you studied the required subjects. Check the exam’s official information bulletin and the Association of Indian Universities equivalence rules for your qualification before you apply.
  • You need a Class 12 level qualification. The IB Diploma and A-levels are at that level. The IGCSE is at Class 10 level.
  • You may need an equivalence certificate. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) issues it for qualifications completed outside India or from boards not listed by the exam agency.
  • Subjects must match. JEE needs Physics, Chemistry and Maths. NEET needs Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.
  • The calendars clash. IB and A-level exams fall in the same weeks as JEE Advanced, NEET and CUET.

Which qualifications are at Class 12 level?

QualificationLevelWhere it stands for JEE, NEET and CUET
IGCSE, GCSE or O-levelClass 10Not enough on its own. Complete a Class 12 level course first.
AS-level onlyPart of Class 12Usually not enough alone. Ask AIU before assuming.
Cambridge or Pearson A-level (full)Class 12The 2026 JEE Main bulletin lists the GCE A-level among accepted qualifications. Check subjects, and for NEET check equivalence.
IB DiplomaClass 12Commonly accepted with an AIU equivalence certificate. Confirm in the bulletin for your exam and year.
American high school diploma, with or without APClass 12 (12 years of schooling)AIU decides equivalence. Do not assume. Ask before you plan.

JEE Main: the rules to know

These come from the 2026 information bulletin. The 2027 bulletin is not out yet, so check it as soon as NTA publishes it.

  • Qualifying exam. Class 12 or an equivalent. The 2026 rules list any public school, board or university exam in India or abroad recognised as equivalent by AIU, and the GCE Advanced level (London or Cambridge).
  • Equivalence certificate. A candidate who finished Class 12 or an equivalent outside India, or from a board not specifically listed, should bring an AIU certificate.
  • Year of passing. For the 2026 attempt: passed in 2024 or 2025, or appearing in 2026. Expect the same three-year window for 2027 (2025, 2026 or 2027), and confirm it in the bulletin.
  • Age. There is no age limit.
  • Subjects. For B.E. and B.Tech seats, you need Physics, Chemistry and Maths. JoSAA and DASA can add their own subject and marks rules, so check those too.
  • 2027 dates. Session 1 is on 22–24 and 28–30 January 2027 (tentative). Registration is expected from late October.

NEET UG: the rules to know

  • Qualification. Class 12 or an equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English.
  • Marks. In 2026, general-category candidates needed at least 50% in the three sciences.
  • Who can apply. Indian nationals, NRI, OCI, PIO and foreign-national candidates could apply. Students from foreign boards had to submit an AIU equivalence certificate.
  • English. Make sure English is part of your qualification. If it is not, ask AIU or NTA before you apply.
  • 2027. NTA has not announced a date. The exam moves to computer-based mode from 2027.

CUET UG: the rules to know

CUET UG is used by central, state, deemed and private universities in India. Each university decides which boards and subject combinations it accepts for each course, so a CUET score alone does not guarantee a seat. Check the course page of every university on your list.

In the 2026 cycle, registration ran from 3 January to 26 February and the exam ran from 11 to 31 May 2026. For 2027, the notification is expected around January 2027 and the exam in May or June. NTA has not confirmed either.

What the AIU equivalence certificate is

The Association of Indian Universities checks whether a qualification from another board or country is equal to the Indian Class 12 and issues a certificate if it is. NTA asks for it when your qualification was completed outside India or comes from a board it does not list.

AIU has its own application and document list. Start well before you need the certificate, and check its website for what to submit in your situation, such as whether predicted results are accepted.

The syllabus gap

Being eligible is one thing. Being ready is another. JEE and NEET follow the NCERT syllabus for Classes 11 and 12, and the NTA publishes it on its website. Compare it with your school syllabus topic by topic.

Gaps that often need attention for IB and A-level students:

  • JEE Maths. Coordinate geometry and conic sections, plus speed on long calculations.
  • JEE Physics and Chemistry. Numerical problems under time pressure, and the descriptive inorganic and organic chemistry in NCERT.
  • NEET Biology. Line-by-line detail from NCERT, which tests recall more than most international courses do.

The exam calendars clash

This is the practical problem. An IB student’s May exams overlap with the main Indian entrance exams. These are the 2027 windows as they stand today.

ExamWhenStatus
JEE Main Session 122–24 and 28–30 January 2027Tentative
JEE Main Session 2April 2027Not announced
JEE AdvancedExpected May 2027Not announced
NEET UGExpected around May 2027Not announced
CUET UGExpected May or June 2027Not announced
IB Diploma exams (May session)From 23 April to about 18 or 19 May 2027Sources differ on the last day. Your school coordinator holds your timetable.
Cambridge and Pearson A-levelsRoughly late April to early June 2027Estimated. Check your board’s timetable.

Session 1 of JEE Main in January is the only JEE Main session that falls before the IB May exams. Students who want India as an option need to plan around that. Ask your school coordinator and the exam agency early about your options.

A realistic plan for an IB student

An illustrative example, not a real student: a Grade 12 IB student in Dubai who wants to keep NITs and IIITs open through DASA.

WhenWhat to do
Now, October 2026Read the 2026 JEE Main bulletin. Check subjects, equivalence and the target institutes’ rules. Ask AIU what it needs.
Late October to NovemberRegister for JEE Main Session 1 when NTA opens the form.
22–30 January 2027Sit Session 1. Treat it as the main attempt, because later sessions clash with IB exams.
February to AprilFocus on IB internal assessments and mock exams. Keep light JEE revision.
23 April to mid-MayIB exams.
Summer 2027Results, then DASA registration with the JEE Main rank, if eligible.

A checklist before you decide

  • Is my qualification Class 12 level?
  • Does the exam bulletin list it, or do I need an AIU certificate?
  • Did I study the required subjects, including English for NEET?
  • What do my target institutes require on subjects and marks?
  • Which exam dates clash with my school exams?
  • Have I compared the NTA syllabus with my school syllabus?

Frequently asked questions

Is the IB accepted for NEET?

It can be, if it is recognised as equivalent to Class 12 and includes Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. NEET asks foreign-board students for an AIU equivalence certificate. Check the bulletin each year.

Is an A-level equivalent to Class 12 in India?

The 2026 JEE Main bulletin lists the GCE Advanced level among accepted qualifications. For NEET and for university admissions, ask AIU and the institute, because rules differ by exam and year.

Can IGCSE students sit JEE?

Not directly. The IGCSE is at Class 10 level. A student needs to complete a Class 12 level qualification first, such as A-levels or the IB Diploma.

Do students with an American high school diploma and AP exams qualify?

Possibly, but do not assume. AIU decides whether the diploma is equivalent, and each exam sets its own subject rules. Ask before you plan.

Do I have to be in India to sit the exams?

Not always. JEE Main has had exam cities outside India, and our post on taking JEE Main from outside India covers them. Check the bulletin for the NEET and CUET city lists.
