NEET, UCAT or MCAT: Which Exam Leads to Which Medical Degree?
A student in Class 11 in Abu Dhabi hears three exam names. The family says NEET. A tutor says UCAT. A cousin in Texas says MCAT. All three are real medical entrance exams, and none of them is a substitute for another. Each belongs to a different route and a different stage of life.
This guide sorts them out, with the dates that matter right now.

NEET UG: the route for medicine in India
NEET UG is for students who have finished, or are finishing, Class 12 or an equivalent. The 2026 rules asked for Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English, with at least 50% marks in the three sciences for the general category. NRI, OCI, PIO and foreign-national candidates can apply. If your Class 12 equivalent is from a foreign board such as the IB or A-levels, you need an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities. What changed in 2026. NEET UG 2026 was held on 3 May 2026. NTA cancelled it on 12 May after paper-leak allegations, and held it again on 21 June 2026 in pen-and-paper mode. Results came out on 16 July. The Education Ministry has said NEET UG will move to computer-based mode from 2027.
What we know about 2027. NTA has not announced a date or an information bulletin. In 2026 the bulletin came out on 8 February and registration ran into mid-March, and the exam was in early May. Plan on a similar pattern, but treat it as a guess until NTA publishes the dates.
UCAT: UK medicine and dentistry
The UCAT is a skills test. It does not ask about Biology or Chemistry. Since 2025 it has three reasoning subtests (Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning) plus a Situational Judgement Test.
You sit it in the summer before you apply. For the 2026 cycle, registration opened on 20 May, the test window ran from 13 July to 24 September, and booking closed on 16 September. Results are valid for one admissions cycle. UCAT 2026 results count for entry in 2027, or deferred entry in 2028. Applicants get their score before the UCAS deadline, which is how they choose universities wisely.
So a student who wants to start in 2028 would sit the UCAT in summer 2027. The 2027 dates will be confirmed early in 2027.
The UCAT does not replace academics. UK medical schools also ask for A-levels, the IB or another accepted qualification, and some interview. Places for international students are limited, so check each school’s page on how it treats your board. The UCAS deadline for medicine for 2027 entry was 15 October 2026, which has just passed.
Students aiming for Australia or New Zealand take UCAT ANZ instead. It has its own registration. For 2027 entry, the window ran from 1 July to 5 August 2026.
MCAT: not for school leavers
In the US and Canada, medicine is a graduate degree. Students first complete a bachelor’s degree, usually four years, and then apply to medical school. The MCAT is taken during or after that bachelor’s degree, often the year before applying.
That changes the plan for an Indian student aiming at US medicine. The first step is a US or Canadian undergraduate degree, which brings the SAT or ACT and school-record decisions much earlier. Many US medical schools take few international applicants, and some take none, so check each school’s policy before you plan.
For test dates, the AAMC opens scheduling for the whole 2027 testing year on 20, 21 and 22 October 2026, depending on the test centre’s location. Tests run from January to September, and scores come back in about a month. The standard fee for 2026 dates was $355, and AAMC pages for 2027 list about $360. Students testing outside the US and Canada pay a $130 international fee on top.
Which route fits which student
Three illustrative examples, not real students.
- A Class 12 CBSE student in Sharjah who wants MBBS in India. Route: NEET UG. Practise in a computer-based format, because that is how the 2027 exam will run.
- A Grade 11 IB student in London who wants to study medicine in the UK. Route: strong IB grades, UCAT in summer 2027, UCAS application in autumn 2027 for 2028 entry.
- A Class 12 ICSE student in Mumbai who wants to practise in the US. Route: a US or Canadian undergraduate degree first, then the MCAT, then medical school.
Common mix-ups
- NEET is not an entrance score for UK or US medical schools. They use the UCAT or MCAT.
- The UCAT is not a Biology exam. It tests reasoning and judgement, so tutors and practice questions are different from NEET preparation.
- The MCAT is not for 17 and 18 year olds. It comes after a bachelor’s degree.
- An exam result is not an offer. In every country, schools also look at marks, and many interview.
