SAT format references: College Board. Examples and practice routines: OziTutors.

If you keep losing marks on SAT practice tests, “study more” is rarely the right answer. A wrong answer can have several contributing causes, and the next practice step depends on what you find. A student who never learned a topic needs different help from a student who read too fast. This guide names the five useful categories for reviewing SAT mistakes, gives signs for each one, and shows a short routine you can use on any practice test, with or without a tutor.

Key takeaways

Use five overlapping review categories: concept gaps, misleading answer choices, slips, overconfidence and time pressure. These are OziTutors practice categories, not a definitive diagnosis.

Different contributing causes may need different practice. Combine explanation review, independent solving and timing work as needed.

Sort your mistakes into the five causes before you decide what to study.

A short written error log can help you choose focused work before another full test.

Aim to find your top one or two causes. Do not try to fix everything at once.

On this page

Why “just review the answer” is not enough

The five causes at a glance

1. Concept gap

2. Trap

3. Careless slip

4. Reading an explanation can help, but recognition is not the same as solving independently. Even when you knew the topic, an explanation may reveal a more reliable method. Try a similar question later to check that you can apply it.

The better question is not “what was the right answer?” but “why did I choose the wrong one?“

The five causes at a glance

Cause

What happened

Usual fix

Concept gap

You did not know the rule or method

Learn it, then practise it

Trap

You knew the topic but picked an option built to tempt you

Slow down on wording; check what is asked

Careless slip

You knew it, understood it, and made a small error

A checking habit, not more content

Overconfidence

You felt sure, so you did not check, and you were wrong

Check even the “easy” ones; track how often “sure” is wrong

Time pressure

You ran short of time, guessed or rushed

Practise pacing and check underlying fluency

1. Concept gap

Signs: you stared at the question and had no method; you guessed; the explanation felt like new information; you miss the same type of question again and again.

Fix: treat it as a learning problem. Find the topic name, learn the idea from one good source, then do a few questions of that type on a different day. Do not just reread the explanation.

2. Trap

A trap is a wrong option that looks right if you read quickly. It might answer a slightly different question, use the right number in the wrong step, or sound fine but not match the text.

Signs: when you look again, you say “oh, it asked for that“; your wrong option was close to the right one.

Fix: before you choose, finish this sentence in your head: “The question wants me to find ___.” Underline the final ask. In reading questions, point to the exact words in the passage that support your choice.

3. Careless slip

You knew what to do and still lost the mark: you copied a number wrongly, dropped a minus sign, or answered with 2x when the question asked for x.

Signs: you fix it in ten seconds when you look again; you feel annoyed, not confused.

Fix: build one small check into every answer, such as “put the answer back into the question” or “reread the last line”. Careless slips fall when the check becomes automatic, not when you promise to be careful.

4. Overconfidence

This one is easy to miss. You felt sure, moved fast, and were wrong. It often hides in “easy” questions near the start of a module.

Signs: your wrong answers include questions you called easy; you rarely flag questions for review.

Fix: for one week, write “S” (sure), “M” (maybe) or “G” (guess) next to each answer in practice. After marking, count how many “S” answers were wrong. If it is more than a couple, slow down on the questions you feel sure about.

5. Time pressure

You knew the method but ran out of time, so you rushed or guessed.

Signs: wrong answers cluster near the end of a module; you finish with seconds left, or with questions unanswered.

Fix: this is a pacing problem. See our guide to SAT pacing and fatigue. Combine pacing practice with work on any underlying skill gaps: a slow method can also create time pressure.

Worked example: sorting six mistakes

Here is a made-up error log for a student called Rohan. The question below is our own simple example, not an official one.

A taxi charges a fixed ₹50 plus ₹12 for each kilometre. A ride costs ₹230 in total. How many kilometres was the ride? (Working: 230 minus 50 is 180, and 180 divided by 12 is 15 km.)

#

What happened

Cause

1

Taxi question: wrote 180, the cost of the distance, not the distance

Trap (the question asked for km)

2

Could not start a question on exponents

Concept gap

3

Subtracted 7 from 3 and wrote 4

Careless slip

4

Called a grammar question “easy”, never reread it, chose “bring” instead of “brings” after “Each of the students”

Overconfidence

5

Last three questions of a module were guesses

Time pressure

6

Did not know how a semicolon works

Concept gap

Rohan’s pattern: two concept gaps, one trap, one careless slip, one overconfident error and one time-pressure error. He could begin with the two missing topics and add one checking habit, then test those changes on fresh questions.

A 15-minute routine to find your cause

Use this after any practice test:

☐ List every question you got wrong, plus any “G” or “M” answers you got right.

☐ For each one, redo it with no time limit. If you now get it right, examine the original working for a slip, misreading, time pressure or an inefficient method. If you still cannot, identify the missing knowledge or ask for help. One attempt does not establish the cause.

☐ Ask: did I run out of time? If yes, mark it time pressure.

☐ Write one line per mistake: question type, cause, what I will do next time.

☐ Count the causes. Circle the top one or two.

☐ Choose one action for each circled cause (learn a topic, add a check, practise pacing).

What to do with your pattern

If concept gaps lead, pick the topics and learn them. If slips and traps lead, change your habits; you may not need new content at all. If overconfidence leads, slow down and use the “S/M/G” marking. If time pressure leads, practise with a timer. Retest in two to three weeks and see whether your pattern changed.

If you would like help, our SAT maths tutoring and reading and writing tutoring pages explain how 1:1 sessions work. Our guide to SAT warm-up routines can help with careless slips at the start of a test.

Frequently asked questions

How many mistake causes are there on the SAT?

There are many ways to describe them. We use five because they lead to five different fixes: concept gap, trap, careless slip, overconfidence and time pressure. A mistake can involve several categories. Use the labels to choose an action, then check whether it helps on fresh practice.

How do I tell a concept gap from a careless slip?

Redo the question calmly with no timer. Getting it right untimed is a clue, not proof of carelessness. Inspect your first attempt and try a similar question. Missing knowledge needs teaching; weak fluency may need practice as well as a checking habit.

Do I need a tutor to sort my mistakes?

No. You can do it yourself with the routine above. A tutor can help when you cannot tell the causes apart, or when the same cause keeps coming back after you have tried the fix.

How often should I update my error log?

After every full practice test or practice set. A few lines per mistake is enough. The log is useful because it shows patterns over several tests, not one.

Will fixing my mistake causes raise my SAT score?

We cannot promise a score. Fixing the right causes means your practice time goes to the right place, which is a better use of time than repeating what you already do well. Results differ from student to student.

Next step: choose focused SAT practice

Explore OziTutors SAT preparation.
