How to Choose a Route to an Engineering Degree

If your child is in Class 11 or Grade 11 and wants to study engineering, someone has probably told you to start JEE preparation. Someone else has said the SAT is the way to go. Both are right, for different goals.

JEE leads into engineering colleges in India. The SAT is one part of an application to universities abroad. They are not two versions of the same exam, so the real question is not “which is better?” It is “where do I want to study?” Answer that first, then pick the exam.

The short answer

JEE leads to Indian engineering colleges such as the IITs, while the SAT, often with AP exams, supports applications to US and other international universities. They test different skills on different timelines, so most students pick a main route first and keep the other as a backup.

Aiming for an IIT, NIT or IIIT in India? JEE is the exam. The SAT does not count for these seats.

Aiming for a university in the US or elsewhere abroad? Check each university’s testing policy. Many ask for the SAT or ACT, some do not, and your school record matters more than either.

Not sure yet? Keep Physics, Chemistry and Maths strong in Class 11. That base helps both routes. Decide by the middle of Class 11, because JEE preparation is a long commitment.

What each exam is for

JEE Main

JEE Advanced

SAT

Run by

National Testing Agency (NTA)

One IIT, on a rotation. Questions reward a clear grasp of concepts and the ability to solve multi-step problems under time pressure. Your rank, compared with lakhs of other candidates, is what decides the seat.

The SAT tests reading, writing and maths. The maths is mostly algebra, data analysis, geometry and some trigonometry, at a level many students reach by Grade 10 or 11. There is no Physics or Chemistry on it. A strong score helps, but admissions teams read it together with school marks, subjects, essays and activities.

This is the biggest practical difference. On the JEE route, one rank decides most of the outcome. On the route abroad, the SAT is one input among many.

The dates side by side

These are the dates that matter this season. Dates marked tentative can change.

When

Route

What happens

Late October 2026 (expected)

JEE

JEE Main Session 1 registration is expected to open. Decisions usually arrive in spring. Check each college’s own page for exact dates.

Subjects and depth

For engineering in India, Physics, Chemistry and Maths all count, and the JEE syllabus goes deep in all three. CBSE and ISC schools teach to that syllabus.

For engineering abroad, maths and physics matter most. Many engineering programmes want to see the hardest maths and science your school offers, such as calculus and physics, and sometimes chemistry. In the IB or AP, that usually means Higher Level Maths and Physics, or the AP versions. Check the requirements for each engineering branch you are considering.

Cost and effort

The SAT costs $68 to register in the US. Students testing elsewhere usually pay a regional fee on top. Education sites list it as $43 for many countries, which brings the total to about $111, and late registration adds about $38. Confirm the current amount in your College Board account.

The JEE Main fee will be in the 2027 information bulletin, which NTA has not published yet.

SAT preparation is usually shorter and lighter than JEE preparation, but it only helps if the rest of the application is strong. JEE preparation is a multi-year effort. The payoff is a rank that can decide the seat.

If you are an NRI, OCI, PIO or Gulf-based family

The DASA scheme (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) gives NRI, OCI, PIO and foreign-national students a separate route into NITs, IIITs and some other institutes. The 2026 DASA brochure says admission is based on the JEE Main rank. The SAT was not part of it. Read the 2027 brochure when it comes out, because rules can change.

So if your goal is an NIT or IIIT through DASA, you need JEE Main. If your goal is a university abroad, the SAT (where the university asks for it) and your school record matter, and a JEE rank does not replace them.

Gulf-based families can also check the CIWG category (Children of Indian Workers in the Gulf) inside DASA. Our DASA rank predictor page explains how ranks map to seats.

Can you prepare for both?

Sometimes. The two share a maths and physics base, so time spent on one is not wasted on the other. But the calendars clash. JEE Main Session 1 is in late January, SAT dates run to June, JEE Advanced is expected in May, and AP or IB exams also fall in April and May. Most students who try both choose a main route by the middle of Class 11 and treat the other as a backup.

Three examples. These are illustrative, not real students.

A Class 11 CBSE student in Dubai who wants an NIT through DASA. Main route: JEE. The SAT is not needed.

A Grade 11 IB student in Singapore who wants engineering in the US or UK. Main route: strong IB grades and any tests the universities ask for. JEE would not help.

A Class 11 student in Abu Dhabi who is undecided. Keep Physics, Chemistry and Maths strong, take a free SAT practice test over the winter break, and decide by the end of Class 11 using the questions below.

Five questions to decide

Where do I want to be at 18 to 22? India, the US, the UK, Canada or somewhere else.

What does each college on my list ask for? Open each admissions page and write down the tests.

Do I enjoy long, deep problem-solving in Physics, Chemistry and Maths? JEE rewards that.

What can the family afford? Tuition and financial aid differ widely, and aid for international students can be limited. Check each university’s rules.

Which curriculum is the student on? CBSE and ISC match the JEE syllabus. The IB and AP fit applications abroad better.

A short disclosure: OziTutors teaches both JEE and the SAT, so we have no reason to push you either way. The right route is the one that matches where you want to study. If it helps, the first lesson is free.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply to IITs and US universities at the same time?

Yes. They run on different timelines, so the real limit is study time. US decisions usually arrive in spring, before JoSAA and DASA counselling in summer, so some families keep both options open.

Is the SAT needed for IIT or NIT admission?

No. IIT seats go through JEE Main, JEE Advanced and JoSAA. NIT, IIIT and other centrally funded college seats go through JEE Main and JoSAA. For NRI, OCI, PIO and foreign-national students, DASA uses the JEE Main rank.

Is JEE useful for applying to US universities?

Not as a score. US applications do not ask for JEE. Admissions teams read your school record, any tests the college names, essays and activities. The advanced maths and physics you learn may still help your school performance.

Which is harder, JEE or the SAT?

They measure different things, so the comparison is not fair. JEE is a competitive ranking exam with great depth in three subjects. The SAT is a broader test whose score is read alongside the rest of the application.

When should I decide between them?

Ideally by the middle of Class 11. That leaves a full year or more to prepare properly for the route you choose.

JEE or SAT?
