It would mean months of preparation. And the answer has changed a lot in the last few years. Some US universities that dropped the test have brought it back. The UK mostly never used it. In India it matters at some private universities but not at the IITs or NITs.

Below is the picture country by country, and then a simple way to check your own list of universities.

Three kinds of SAT policy

Before you read any list, know that universities use one of three approaches.

Policy

What it means

Where you will see it

Required

No score, no review. Since then a number of them have reversed. For students applying in the 2026–27 cycle (entering in fall 2027), these require SAT or ACT scores:

Six Ivy League schools: Harvard, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell and the University of Pennsylvania.

Other top universities: MIT, Stanford, Caltech and Georgetown. Johns Hopkins also asks for scores from fall 2026 entry.

Public universities: the Florida public universities accept the SAT, the ACT or the CLT. Georgia Tech, UT Austin and Purdue are also on most “required” lists.

Two details are worth knowing. Princeton and Columbia are test-optional for this cycle only. Both have said scores will be required from the 2027–28 cycle, which means students entering in fall 2028. And Yale ended its test-flexible option in May 2026, so AP or IB scores no longer stand in for the SAT or ACT there.

Some well-known universities, such as Duke, remain test-optional for now. The University of California and Cal State systems do not use scores at all.

Policies are usually the same for international applicants, but a few universities have separate pages for them. Open the admissions page for the year you are applying and read the international section.

United Kingdom: not a selection test

No UK university uses the SAT to choose between applicants. UK universities look at your school qualifications and predicted grades, your personal statement and reference, and in some subjects an admissions test such as UCAT or ESAT.

The SAT appears in one place only: the entry-requirement tables for applicants from the US system. There it usually works together with AP exams. At Oxford, for example, a US applicant to Mathematics can offer four APs at grade 5 including Calculus BC, or three APs at grade 5 plus an SAT of 1480 or above (or ACT 33). Oxford’s published SAT thresholds for other courses sit slightly lower, and it does not combine scores from different sittings.

If you study CBSE, ICSE, IB or A-Level, the SAT is not the route. Each UK university lists how it reads your own qualification, so look that up first. The main UCAS deadline for most courses is 6pm UK time on 13 January 2027. The 15 October deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses has already passed.

India: it matters at some private universities, not at the IITs or NITs

The IITs, NITs and IIITs admit through JEE. That includes students applying from abroad. The DASA brochure for 2026 says admission is based on JEE Main, and the SAT is no longer accepted for DASA. If you are an NRI or foreign student aiming for these institutes, JEE Main is the exam to plan around. We explain how to sit it from overseas in our guide to JEE Main from outside India.

A group of private universities do accept the SAT, in some cases as an alternative to their own entrance test. The names that come up most often are Ashoka, FLAME, Krea, Plaksha and Shiv Nadar. Each has its own score range and rules, and these change, so check the admissions page of each.

Canada and Australia

Many leading Canadian universities do not require the SAT or ACT. A 2023 Simon Fraser University paper listed UBC, the University of Toronto, McGill, Waterloo and several others among those that do not. Some may still accept scores in particular cases, so check the rule for your course and your school qualification.

Australian universities mainly assess your school-leaving results and publish entry requirements by country and qualification. Look up your own qualification on the university’s international students page before you spend time on the SAT.

If the score is optional, should you take it?

There is no single answer, but these questions help.

Is your curriculum easy for a reader to compare? Admissions teams see many school systems. A strong score can add a second, shared measure alongside your marks.

Where does your score sit against the college’s published range? Many colleges publish the middle range of scores for admitted students. If you are inside or above it, a score can help. If you are clearly below, think twice.

Does merit aid use scores? Some colleges and scholarships do. Check the college’s financial aid page.

What else could the time buy? Months of SAT prep are months not spent on school grades, AP or IB work, or your essays.

A simple way to decide

List 8 to 10 universities you may apply to.

Open each admissions page and find the testing policy for your application year. Write down the date you checked.

Mark each one as required, optional or not used.

If any are required, plan your SAT dates now. If all are optional, compare your likely score with their published range. If none use it, put your time elsewhere.

Dates to know this season

If a university on your list requires the SAT, these are the next dates. Registration deadlines close at 11:59 pm US Eastern time. For 7 November, that is about 9:29 am on 24 October in India and 7:59 am in the UAE.

SAT date

Register by

Late or change deadline

Scores expected

7 Nov 2026

23 Oct

27 Oct

20 Nov

5 Dec 2026

20 Nov

24 Nov

18 Dec

6 Mar 2027

19 Feb

23 Feb

To be announced

1 May 2027

16 Apr

20 Apr

To be announced

5 Jun 2027

21 May

25 May

To be announced

Late registration costs extra, and a seat is never guaranteed. Princeton and Columbia require scores from the 2027–28 cycle (fall 2028 entry). You can see all the major exam dates in our global exam calendar for 2026–27.

Frequently asked questions

Which universities require the SAT in 2026–27?

At least six Ivy League schools (Harvard, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell and Penn) require SAT or ACT scores this cycle, along with MIT, Stanford, Caltech and Georgetown. Florida’s public universities also require the SAT, ACT or CLT. Always confirm on each university’s own page.

Do UK universities accept the SAT?

Some do, but only as part of the entry requirements for applicants from the US system, usually together with AP exams. No UK university uses the SAT to choose between applicants, and Indian board students are judged on their Class 12 results and other listed qualifications.

Is the SAT needed for the IITs, NITs or DASA?

No. The IITs and NITs admit through JEE, and the DASA 2026 brochure says admission is based on JEE Main. The SAT is no longer accepted for DASA.

Which Indian universities accept the SAT?

A group of private universities accept it, and Ashoka, FLAME, Krea, Plaksha and Shiv Nadar are the names most often listed. Each sets its own rules, so check the admissions page.

Do Canadian universities need the SAT?

Many leading Canadian universities do not require it. A 2023 Simon Fraser University paper listed UBC, the University of Toronto, McGill and Waterloo among those that do not require SAT or ACT scores. Check the exact rule for your course and qualification.

Should I still take the SAT if my colleges are test-optional?

Only if a score is likely to help. Look at the middle range of scores each college publishes. If you are inside or above it, a score can add to your application. If you are well below it, your time may be better spent on school grades.

The SAT matters a lot for some universities and not at all for others. The only useful answer is the one for your own list. Write the list, check each policy, and decide after that. If the list includes a university that requires the SAT, start early. If it does not, you may have just saved yourself a few months. If you decide to prepare, you can book a free first lesson with an OziTutors SAT tutor.
