Marks are given for accurate points, not length. Check your board’s mark scheme style.

Many IGCSE biology students know the content and still lose marks on the longer questions. The reason is usually not knowledge. It is the way the answer is written. The examiner has a list of points to award. If your answer hides those points, wanders off, or stays vague, you lose marks.

This guide gives a simple method for long answers. It applies to both Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, though question styles differ a little between boards.

What is a long answer question?

It is a question worth several marks, often four to six, where you must write in sentences. It may ask you to explain a process, describe an experiment or discuss a result. Some are marked by a list of points, and others by levels, where the examiner judges the quality and completeness of the answer. Look at past papers from your own board to see which style you will face.

Start with the command word

The command word tells you what to do. If you do the wrong thing, you can lose marks even with correct facts.

Describe: say what happens. Give the steps or the pattern. No reasons needed.

Explain: give reasons. Use “because”, “so”, “therefore”.

State: give a short answer with no explanation.

Compare: talk about both things and give similarities and differences.

Suggest: use what you know to work out a likely answer for something you may not have seen.

Evaluate or discuss: give points on more than one side and reach a judgement.

Circle the command word before you begin. It takes two seconds.

The PEEL method for biology

Many students find a simple structure helpful.

P (Point): state a clear scientific point.

E (Evidence or detail): add the key term or fact.

E (Explain): say why it happens, or what it leads to.

L (Link): connect to the question or to the next point.

You do not have to write PEEL as a label. Just use it to shape each sentence or two.

Plan in the margin

Before you write, jot three to five short points in the margin. For a six-mark question, aim for at least five or six separate valid points. This stops you from repeating the same idea three times, which does not earn extra marks.

Use the correct scientific terms

Examiners give credit for the exact terms. “The plant takes in water” is weaker than “water enters the root hair cell by osmosis”. Keep a list of key terms for each topic, and practise writing them in your own sentences.

Worked example

Question: Explain how the structure of a leaf helps photosynthesis. (4 marks)

A weak answer: “The leaf is flat and green so it can get light and make food.”

This is vague. It uses “make food” instead of glucose and does not link structure to function.

A stronger answer: “The leaf is thin and flat, so it has a large surface area to absorb light and a short distance for carbon dioxide to diffuse in. It contains many chloroplasts with chlorophyll, which absorb light energy for photosynthesis. Stomata on the lower surface let carbon dioxide enter and oxygen leave. Air spaces inside the leaf let gases move around so that carbon dioxide reaches all the cells.”

Each sentence gives a structure, and each gives a reason. That is what earns the marks.

Common ways students lose marks

Repeating the question. “Photosynthesis is important because it is important” earns nothing.

Being vague. Words like “helps”, “goes”, “more” and “stuff” do not earn marks.

Mixing up describe and explain.

Leaving out units, or the “so what”. A change in rate should be linked to the reason.

Writing an essay when four points would do. Long does not mean better.

Practice routine for the last few weeks

Choose one topic a day.

Write two long answers from past papers under timed conditions.

Mark them against the mark scheme.

Note the exact words that the mark scheme uses.

Rewrite your answer using those words.

After a few weeks, you will start to write in the same style as the mark scheme.

Data and experiment questions

Some long questions ask you to plan or evaluate an experiment. Use this checklist: what you change (independent variable), what you measure (dependent variable), what you keep the same (control variables), how you repeat, and how you will make it safe. Practise writing this in full sentences.

How a OZI tutor can help

A tutor can mark your practice answers line by line and show you where the marks are lost. This kind of feedback is hard to get in a big class. If you are preparing for a November or later series, weekly written practice with feedback can make a real difference.

FAQ

How long should a six-mark answer be? Usually a short paragraph, or a few sentences. Aim for six clear points, not six lines of padding.

Do I need bullet points? Check your board’s guidance. For most questions, full sentences are safer.

What if I do not know the answer? Write what you do know that is relevant, using correct terms. Partial marks are often available.

Is it worth memorising mark schemes? It is worth reading them closely. They show which words earn marks.

IGCSE Biology: How to Write Answers to Long Questions To write a strong long answer in IGCSE biology, read the command word, plan three to five points in the margin, use correct scientific terms, link each point with “because” or “so that”, and keep to the question.
