Learn each concept from a good textbook, solve graded problems on it, keep a formula-with-conditions sheet, and review every mistake by cause. Most lost marks come from units, signs and misreading, not from missing theory.

Ask ten JEE students which subject worries them most and many will say physics. It is not because the syllabus is huge. It is because physics questions punish small errors. One wrong sign, one missed unit or one forgotten condition and the whole answer is wrong.

This post is about the habits that fix that. It is written for students preparing for JEE Main 2027, but the method also helps for boards and other physics exams.

What the JEE Main physics section looks like

In JEE Main Paper 1, each subject has multiple-choice questions and numerical-value questions. The numerical ones have no options, so you cannot work backwards from an answer. The exact number of questions and the rules on choice can change from year to year, so read the current information bulletin from the NTA before you plan your practice.

Two things stay true every year. The paper mixes direct formula questions with multi-step problems. And the marks are decided far more by accuracy than by how many advanced topics you have seen.

JEE Main 2026 Maths Analysis: Top 7 High-Weightage Concepts

Habit 1: Learn the idea before the formula

Many students start from the formula list. That works until the question is worded a little differently. Start from the idea instead.

Take work and energy. The idea is that work done by the net force changes kinetic energy. If you understand this, you can handle a block on a slope, a spring, or a car braking, without hunting for a separate formula each time.

For every chapter, try to explain the main idea in two sentences, out loud, without looking at notes. If you cannot, you are not ready for problems yet.

Habit 2: Solve in graded steps

Do not jump to the hardest questions. Work in three levels for each chapter.

Basic: direct application, one formula. Do enough to feel bored.

Medium: two or three steps, a little twist.

Hard: problems that combine chapters or need a careful setup.

Move up only when you get about eight out of ten right at the current level. Students who skip to hard problems early often end up memorising solutions instead of learning methods.

Habit 3: Check units and dimensions every time

This is the cheapest way to save marks in physics. Before you finalise any answer, look at the units. If you are finding a speed and your answer has units of metres, something went wrong.

Dimensional analysis can also help you reject wrong options in multiple-choice questions. It cannot tell you the exact number, but it can tell you which options are impossible.

Habit 4: Draw before you calculate

A neat diagram with forces, directions and given values marked on it removes half the errors in mechanics and electricity. Do it even when you feel it is a waste of time. Choose one direction as positive and stay with it until the end.

Habit 5: Keep a “formula with conditions” sheet

A formula is only useful if you know when it applies. The time period formula for a simple pendulum works for small angles. The equations of motion need constant acceleration. Many errors happen because a correct formula was used in the wrong situation.

Keep one page per chapter with three parts: the formula, the conditions it needs, and one example where students misuse it. Revise the sheet regularly. It should be short enough to read in ten minutes.

Habit 6: Practise numerical-value questions on purpose

Since there are no options, you need to trust your working. Practise these with a habit of a quick sense check: is the answer the right size and the right sign? A mass of 5000 kg for a school-lab trolley or a speed higher than light are quick ways to spot a mistake.

Also practise rounding the way the question asks. Small differences in rounding can turn a right answer into a wrong one.

How to divide your time across chapters

Do not treat every chapter equally. Look at your own test results and put more time where you lose marks. As a general guide, mechanics and electricity and magnetism carry a lot of the paper and support other chapters, so they deserve strong foundations. Modern physics and some smaller chapters can often be improved faster and give quick returns.

A weekly rhythm that works

Two days: learn a new chapter and solve basic and medium problems.

One day: solve previous-year questions on chapters you have already covered.

One day: revise formula sheets and redo questions from your error log.

One day: take a timed test, either a full paper or a physics section.

One day: review the test in detail and label every mistake.

One day: rest, or light revision only.

Common mistakes to avoid

Watching many solution videos without trying problems yourself.

Collecting too many books. One good textbook, one problem book and previous-year papers are enough for most students.

Ignoring NCERT. Some questions come straight from concepts stated there.

Doing only the topics you enjoy.

Never reviewing wrong answers.

When to ask for help

If you have been stuck on the same chapter for more than a week, or if your physics marks stay flat over four or five tests, it may be time to talk to a teacher. A tutor can find the gap in one or two sessions that might take you weeks to find alone. OziTutors offers a free demo so you can see whether a mentor is a good fit before you decide.

FAQ

Is physics the hardest subject in JEE Main?

It depends on the student. Many find it hard because of problem-solving, not because of the amount of theory. Students who like maths often find it easier.

How many hours a day should I study physics?

There is no single answer. Two to three focused hours a day, with problem-solving and review, works better than long unfocused hours.

Should I memorise derivations?

Understand the main ones. You do not need to memorise every derivation, but knowing where a formula comes from helps you remember its conditions.

Is NCERT enough for JEE Main physics?

NCERT builds the base and is useful, but most students also need a problem book and previous-year questions for practice.

JEE Main physics rewards clear basics and careful problem-solving more than memorised tricks.
